China Patent Agent Qualification Examination Held

On December 5 and 6, 2009, the China Patent Agent Qualification Examination was held in 15 cities including Beijing. Compared with recent years, the number and educational background of the examinees are higher.

According to the SIPO, it is the eleventh patent agent qualification examination since 1992 and the first examination after the release of the SIPO No.147 Proclamation Reform Scheme on the National Patent Agent Qualification Examination. The total number of examinees has reached 10,000 for the first time, including 35 examinees from Hong Kong and Macao, increasing by 34.7% compared with 2008. There are 2,839 examinees with master degrees and the examinees with junior college degrees increased by 150.67%.

15 cities were authorized to hold the patent agent examination in 2009, whereas only 12 cities were authorized before. The examination covers mechanical science, electrical science and chemistry. The number of mechanical science examinees reached 4,300. In the newly developing areas, the number of the examinees increased rapidly and the related technologies were broader. The examinees’ professions included staff members from patent agencies, scientific researchers, public officials and freelancers, among which the latter two groups have higher increasing rates, which are up 93.56% and 91.5%, respectively. Up to this point, there are more than 10,000 examinees that have passed the patent agent qualification exam and more than 6,000 licensed patent agents in practice.
